Savings groups in Makwanpur go straight to market

Nine women's groups have opened a joint vegetable collection centre, cutting out the middlemen who set the price.

Nine women's savings groups in Makwanpur have jointly funded and opened a vegetable collection centre. Previously, produce moved through middlemen and farmers had no part in setting the price.

The groups now agree a weekly price and arrange collective transport. In the first four months alone, members' average monthly income has risen noticeably.

A feasibility study for cold storage and packaging is under way for the next phase.
